Christmas tree decorating tradition

Many people around the world are partaking in the tradition of putting up and decorating a Christmas tree.  From what I’ve read we owe this fabulous tradition to the Germans.  Thanks.

I remember lying on my back under my grandmother’s tree with my cousins watching big bubble lights through the tree.  It was always a large fat tree with traditional ornaments collected over the years.  The fresh cut tree smell was as good as the visuals.  There was always a coconut under the tree that they told us little kids was a Santa Clause egg.  It was an exotic treat and tradition my grandfather started.  On Christmas day the coconut was cracked open and shredded on a white coconut cake.  I take a memory trip back in time every time I see one.
This year we moved into a larger house that will allow me and the little grands to decorate several trees.  When I told them the plan they became very excited.  We started decorating Thanksgiving day with a woodland tree in the den.  It stands in an old cotton stuffed galvanized wash tub, with tufts of cotton and shredded snow, dozens of birds and bird houses on it.  I especially love the little birds that look like finches.

Girl grand picked out an angel that could hold a bird for the topper.  Last we picked out some woodsy snowmen, big pine cones and another birdhouse to place under the tree with a couple of large toys and gift boxes.  When it was done I reveled in seeing the grands lying under the tree giggling happily and singing Christmas songs.
